Summer 2024 Newsletter - Waterbeach Angling Club Update

Welcome to the Summer 2024 edition of the Waterbeach Angling Club Newsletter! As the warmer weather sets in and the days grow longer, we’re excited to share all the latest news from our club. Whether you’re an experienced angler or new to the fishing community, there’s something for everyone here in Cambridge. Let’s dive into the updates and see what’s been happening since April.

Memberships on the Rise

We’re delighted to announce that memberships have been more popular than ever this year, with many new members joining our community for the first time. Our premier Lake Leland continues to be in high demand—so much so that we’ve had to close the waiting list after reaching 15 eager anglers. It’s fantastic to see so many people passionate about fishing here in Cambridge, but we do apologise to those who weren’t able to secure a spot this season.

The Crabtree Society Visit

We were honoured to host the Crabtree Society, a group dedicated to traditional fishing methods. If you’re not familiar with them, these anglers prefer an old-school approach, using cane rods, centre pin reels, and quill floats. It was a nostalgic day at Dodd’s Water in our Landbeach facility, where local representative Russ and six other members enjoyed a successful outing. They caught a variety of species including bream, crucian carp, rudd, roach, tench, and even gudgeon. The feedback was overwhelmingly positive, and we look forward to welcoming them back soon.

YouTube Features: Steve Goes Fishing

Steve Cowley, the man behind the popular YouTube channel “Steve Goes Fishing,” has paid us four visits recently, creating some fantastic content that showcases what Waterbeach Angling Club has to offer. His videos highlight the diversity of our waters, with features on Atkins Lake, Dodd’s Water, and Magpie Lake. If you haven’t seen them yet, here are the videos to check out:

These videos are a great way to get a feel for the club, especially if you’re considering joining us or just want to see what our waters are like.

Family Fun Fishing Day - 29th June

One of the highlights of our summer so far has been the Family Fun Fishing Day on 29th June. It was a fantastic event, with plenty of smiles and memorable catches. Here are some of the day’s highlights:

  • Great Attendance: We were thrilled to welcome over 20 visitors, all of whom gave us positive feedback.

  • Amazing Catches: The day saw some impressive catches, including carp weighing over 10lb at Magpie Lake and excellent silver fish catches at Dodd’s Water.

  • Expert Coaching: Our coaches were on hand to offer tips on casting techniques and bait selection, ensuring everyone had the best chance of landing a catch.

We’re already looking forward to next year’s event and hope to see even more families enjoying a day out by the water.

Investing in Our Future

We’re committed to maintaining and improving our facilities at Waterbeach Angling Club. This summer, we’ve invested in new equipment to help keep our main site at Landbeach in top condition. We’ve also purchased two secure containers to store our tools and equipment, ensuring everything is well-organised and safe.

A significant amount of money has gone into these improvements, including a complete refit of the toilet facilities. We’re just waiting on the installation of a new hand air dryer to complete the upgrade. Looking ahead, our long-term goal is to convert the opposite side of the toilet into a second facility, moving the bait and tackle shop into one of the garages on site. We’re excited about these changes and the benefits they’ll bring to our members.

A Big Thank You to Our Team

Our club wouldn’t be what it is today without the hard work and dedication of our committee members. John, Les, Colin, and others have put in countless hours to ensure our site is in excellent condition. Next time you see them, please take a moment to thank them for their efforts.

Club Rules and Etiquette

As always, we remind all members and visitors to familiarise themselves with our club rules, which are clearly posted around the site. A clean and respectful environment is important to us, so please remember to take any litter home with you when you leave.

Share Your Fishing Experience

We’d love to hear about your experiences at Waterbeach Angling Club! Whether it’s a big catch or just a day well spent by the water, we’d like to feature your stories on our website and Facebook page. You don’t need to share the size or weight of your fish—what matters most is that you enjoyed your time with us.
